Rafael is a lifelong artist who’s father was a renown American illustrator. This enabled him to
grow up in a maestro-apprentice environment which cultivated his creativity. He won several prestigious awards as a young artist but pursued a commercial art career for his livelihood. This brought him to Silicon Valley where he was art director and senior designer for many high tech companies from 1995-2014.
Watercolors attract Rafael as a medium because of the convenience, quick drying, and freedom of being able to paint anywhere, anytime. Rafael believes a sublime intuition is acquired by painting watercolors and he enjoys exploring and sharing the possibilities. The juxtaposition of needing control while also allowing for spontaneity motivates him.
He is a member of Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society, Burlingame Art Society, Society of West-Coast Artists and the Los Gatos Art Association. He has received numerous local and national awards. His studio is in San Carlos where he also conducts private lessons.
