Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming, which develops self-expression and musical creativity. This course is a basic introduction to the world of taiko. This includes Japanese expressions, the kinds and use of taiko, and the sounds of various taiko beats. In each class, everyone will participate by playing on actual drums.
Technically speaking, there are diverse percussion styles associated with regions of the world. Each form has its own unique rhythmic frame. For example, Afro-Cuban rhythms are rooted in the numerous rhythmic patterns of the Clave, Cascara, Guaguanco, Mambo, Macuta, Songo, and Mozambique.
Taiko has its own distinctive structural framework. Besides its creative Asian rhythmic patterns, Taiko includes a sequence of body movements called TE, a form of hitting the drum called KATA, and the skill to control both sound and body movement called WAZA. The providing class is dedicated to articulating these qualities and creatively reformulating these rhythms and movements.
All equipment (including drums and sticks) are provided.
NOTE: Taiko is a physical activity requiring fitness and stamina.
There will be a $50 (Section A) and $100 (Section B) materials fee payable to the instructor at the first class to cover the drum heads replacement.
