WHAT’S NEW? READING, LISTENING,
AND DISCUSSING NIGHTLY NEWS ON U.S. CULTURE

When someone asks you What’s New? you will always have an answer! This advanced class will read and listen to National Public/Radio news on U.S. culture and world affairs. As a supplement we will have a short set of materials based on Reading the News by Pete Sharma, an international teacher.  We will focus on education, health and fitness, high tech, and the environment. Because these stories are quite varied, the Sharma material will help us read and discuss them. We will choose one NPR story per week and, with the help of listed vocabulary, we will discuss the who, what, when, where, why, and how of such stories as How a High School English Teacher Kept AI out of the Classroom and How Improving Neighborhoods Improves Kids’Lives.

Instructor: Sharon Hampel, Ph.D., shampel@pausd.org
