English as a Second Language (ESL)

State-supported ESL classes are
free of charge to students.

Do you need to improve your English to get a job or a promotion? Apply for citizenship? Communicate with your children’s teachers? Become more confident and self-reliant? Whether your goals are personal or professional, the Palo Alto Adult School ESL program offers a wide-range of free classes to help you. For additional fee-based English classes, please see the English Enrichment section.

To enter our FREE classes, new students must register for a placement test.
(Fall 2025 ESL session placement testing registration is now full.)

Next placement test registration will begin
at 9 a.m. on Sat., Dec. 13, 2025 at the Cubberley campus
(for ESL Winter 2026 session: Jan. 12 – Mar. 13, 2026).
